What to pack for London: packing list by season

What to pack for London in every season: the clothes, shoes and day-bag essentials that matter, with the weather to expect and local tips.

Weather by season

London’s weather is famously changeable rather than extreme: rarely very hot, rarely very cold, and rain is possible on any day of the year.

You will walk far more than you expect, including stairs in older Underground stations, so comfortable shoes and a light waterproof beat a big umbrella and heavy coat.

Eating out in London

Dishes to look for in United Kingdom: Fish and chips, Full English breakfast, Sunday roast, Shepherd's pie. Tipping: 10–12.5% in sit-down restaurants if no service charge is on the bill. Not expected when ordering at a pub bar. Tap water: generally safe to drink.

Local tips

  1. 1

You can tap in and out on the Tube and buses with a contactless card or phone instead of buying paper tickets.

  2. 2

Many of the major museums are free to enter; some ask you to book a timed slot.

  3. 3

The Underground can be warm even in winter, so layers you can remove are more useful than one thick coat.
