What to pack for Tokyo: packing list by season

What to pack for Tokyo in every season: the clothes, shoes and day-bag essentials that matter, with the weather to expect and local tips.

Weather by season

Tokyo is vast, efficient and walkable, with days spent on trains, in museums and shrines and in neighbourhoods that each feel different.

It has four distinct seasons: a humid, hot summer with a rainy spell at its start, mild spring and autumn, and a cold, mostly dry winter.

Typical weather by season

Spring Mar–May

Mild and pleasant; cherry blossom season brings crowds.

Summer Jun–Aug

A rainy season in early summer, then hot and very humid.

Autumn Sep–Nov

Warm and humid early, then clear and comfortable; typhoons are possible.

Winter Dec–Feb

Cold, dry and often sunny; snow is uncommon in the city.

The long-term pattern, not a forecast. Central Tokyo. Typhoons are possible in late summer and autumn. Always check the forecast before you pack — Wayfold does this for you.
