Why a week in carry-on (hand luggage) works
Packing light is less about willpower and more about arithmetic. A week away does not need seven outfits; it needs enough pieces that mix well, plus a way to wash a few things halfway through. Once you plan that way, a standard carry-on (hand luggage) bag and a personal item have room to spare.
The rewards are practical. You skip the bag drop and the carousel, you can change plans or trains without dragging a big case, and nothing gets lost in transit. You also spend less time each morning deciding what to wear.
This guide gives you a capsule wardrobe with exact counts, a complete carry-on packing list, and the order to pack it so it all closes. If you want a printable version for a specific trip, start from our carry-on only packing list.
Check your airline’s cabin-bag size first
Before you pack a single sock, look up the cabin-bag rules for your airline and fare. Sizes vary more than people expect, and some low-cost fares include only a small under-seat bag. Here are the published sizes for a few common examples:
| Airline and fare | Bag | Maximum size | Weight limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta, Main Cabin | Carry-on | 56 × 35 × 23 cm (22 × 14 × 9 in) | None published |
| United, Economy | Carry-on | 56 × 35 × 22 cm (22 × 14 × 8.5 in) | None published |
| American Airlines, Main Cabin | Carry-on | 56 × 36 × 23 cm (22 × 14 × 9 in) | None published |
| British Airways, Economy | Cabin bag | 56 × 45 × 25 cm (22 × 17.5 × 10 in) | 23 kg |
| easyJet, Standard | Under-seat bag | 45 × 36 × 20 cm (17.5 × 14 × 8 in) | 15 kg |
| Ryanair, Basic | Small bag | 40 × 30 × 20 cm (15.5 × 12 × 8 in) | None published |
If you fly more than one airline on the trip, pack to the smallest allowance. For a full list, see our airline carry-on sizes pages, for example Ryanair and British Airways.
Measure your bag with the wheels and handles included. That is how airlines measure it at the gate.
Build a capsule wardrobe for seven days
A capsule wardrobe is a short list of clothes that all go together. Pick two or three base colors (neutrals are easiest) and one accent color, then choose every piece so it works with every other piece. That way four tops and two bottoms give you eight different outfits.
| Item | Warm destination | Cool destination |
|---|---|---|
| Tops | 4 T-shirts or light tops | 3 long-sleeve tops + 1 T-shirt |
| Bottoms | 1 pants (trousers) + 2 shorts or a skirt | 2 pants (trousers) or 1 pants + 1 jeans |
| Layer | 1 light jacket | 1 sweater (jumper) + 1 warm or rain jacket |
| Underwear | 5 pairs | 5 pairs |
| Socks | 5 pairs | 5 pairs |
| Sleepwear | 1 set of pajamas (pyjamas) | 1 set of pajamas (pyjamas) |
| Shoes | Walking shoes (worn) + sandals | Walking shoes (worn) + 1 smarter pair if needed |
| Extras | Swimsuit (swimming costume), sun hat | Scarf, gloves if it is cold |
Rules that keep the count low
- Underwear and socks: five, not eight. Wash once mid-trip and you are covered.
- Two pairs of shoes, maximum. Shoes are the heaviest, bulkiest thing you pack. Wear the larger pair.
- One “nice” outfit. A plain top and dark pants (trousers) dress up with the right shoes and an accessory.
- Fabrics that dry overnight. Merino, synthetic blends and thin cotton dry far faster than denim or thick knits.
- Check the forecast the day before. Swap a layer in or out once you know what the week looks like.
In Wayfold, the outfit planner lays out outfits per day from your plans and the weather and shows a capsule count, so you can see that three tops really are enough. The app is coming soon to iPhone and Android.
Toiletries and liquids
Liquids are the part of a carry-on that trips people up at security. Most airports still limit cabin liquids to containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) in one clear 1-litre bag. Some airports with new scanners allow more, so check your departure airport before you fly, and remember the rule at your return airport may be different.
- Decant shampoo, conditioner and body wash into small refillable bottles, or switch to solid shampoo and soap bars.
- Share one bottle of toothpaste and sunscreen (sun cream) between travel companions.
- Put the clear liquids bag at the top of your carry-on so you can lift it out in seconds.
- Leave out anything your accommodation provides. Most hotels supply soap and shampoo; check before you go.
- Buy bulky items such as sunscreen (sun cream) at your destination if you can.

Carry-on (cabin bag)
- Clothes from the capsule table above
- Clear liquids bag with travel-size toiletries
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, hairbrush, razor
- Pain relief (paracetamol / ibuprofen) and Band-Aids (plasters)
- Laundry bag and a few zip-top bags (sandwich bags)
- Compact umbrella if rain is likely
If your carry-on is taken at the gate on a full flight, you will want your passport, medication, chargers and valuables in the personal item. Pack it that way from the start.
How to pack it so it all fits
- Lay everything out first. Put the whole list on the bed and take away anything you are unsure about.
- Shoes go in first, soles against the back panel near the wheels. Stuff socks inside them.
- Roll soft items, fold structured ones. T-shirts, underwear and sleepwear roll tightly; shirts and pants (trousers) lie flat on top.
- Use packing cubes or bags to group clothes by type. They compress a little and make the bag easy to search.
- Fill gaps with chargers, belts and small items.
- Liquids bag and anything you need at security go on top, or in your personal item.
- Close it, then lift it. If you cannot lift it into an overhead bin comfortably, take something out.
Leave a little space. You will almost certainly bring something home that was not there on the way out.
Plan one laundry stop
A single wash on day three or four is what makes the counts above work. Choose accommodation with a washing machine for at least one night, find a laundromat (launderette) near your route, or wash small items in the sink with a little shampoo and hang them overnight.
Roll wet clothes tightly in a towel and press down before you hang them; they will dry hours sooner. Pack a few clothes pegs or a short travel line if you plan to wash in the room.
Frequently asked questions
Can you really pack for a week in a carry-on?
Yes. Pack four or five tops, two or three bottoms, one layer, five sets of underwear and socks, and two pairs of shoes, then wash once mid-trip. Wear your bulkiest layer and shoes on the plane.
What size is a standard carry-on bag?
Many full-service airlines allow a bag of about 56 × 35–45 × 23–25 cm (22 × 14–17.5 × 9–10 in), but low-cost fares can be much smaller. Always check your airline’s own page; see our airline carry-on sizes.
How much liquid can I take in a carry-on?
Most airports still limit cabin liquids to containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) in one clear 1-litre bag. Some airports with new scanners allow more, so check your departure airport before you fly.
Should I roll or fold clothes in a carry-on?
Both. Roll soft items such as T-shirts and underwear, and fold structured items such as shirts and pants (trousers) flat on top so they arrive less creased.
